Publish date: 2024-08-09

There are some iconic films that fans will forever associate with their stars. Titanic wouldn't have been the same without Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, and The Godfather would have a whole different vibe if it were someone else other than Al Pacino who was in the starring role. But as it so happens in Hollywood, the casting couch has had many stars in line for some of the biggest, most influential roles that just did not make the cut.

Some of these actors and actresses missed out on moments that could have changed their careers forever. True, they still won out on other major career opportunities that made them who they are today. But fans can't help but imagine what these movies would have looked like if other actors were cast in the same roles. Here's a look into who could've been the stars of some major Hollywood movies in an alternate universe.

8 Henry Cavill Could Have Been Our Edward

Fans could not believe that the British Superman could have been their very own Edward! It turns out that even the author of the Twilight imagined him in the role before anyone else! When he was asked about almost being cast in the role, the actor told the folks over at the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, "I didn’t know about the movie. I didn’t know about them wanting to cast me and the internet wasn’t quite the tool that it is now, and so I only found out afterwards, “I was like, ‘Oh okay, that would have been cool.”

7 Hugh Jackman Kinda Turned Down James Bond

When Casino Royale was just an idea on a producer's desk, Hugh Jackman was offered the role as 007. In an interview with Variety, Jackman elaborated why he turned the role down saying, “I was about to do X-Men 2 and a call came from my agent asking if I’d be interested in Bond,” Jackman recalled. “I just felt at the time that the scripts had become so unbelievable and crazy, and I felt like they needed to become grittier and real.” Although it might not be his biggest career regret, fans could only imagine what it would be like to see him as Bond.

6 Emma Watson Could Have Starred In La La Land

Fans could just dreamily picture The Harry Potter Star belting out tunes on the hit musical La La Land. 5 Shia LaBeouf Was Almost In Call Me By Your Name

The controversial actor was almost cast as the lead opposite Timothee Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name, but the role ended up going to Armie Hammer. The film's screenwriter said in an interview about why they moved away from the actor that, "At this, I was doubtful. I didn't know much about him, so I watched some of his films. He's an extremely good actor. But as an academic writing about the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, he would be a stretch."

4 Anne Hathaway Turned Down The Silver Linings Playbook

Although Jennifer Lawrence won an Academy Award for her starring role in The Silver Linings Playbook, Hathaway turned down that very same role over creative differences with director David O. Russell. No worries though, Anne Hathaway won an Oscar that very same year for her role in Les Misérables.

3 Al Pacino As Han Solo Was A Thing

The Godfather actor had the legendary script right on his table when he decided to turn it down! Al Pacino cited his reasons for passing on the role as simply as he can, he basically just couldn't get it and thought it was "too out there." Fans however will forever associate the role with Harrison Ford.

2 Emilia Clarke Said No To 50 Shades of Grey

The actress was very frank in her refusal of the role citing that she was sick and tired of nude scenes after her stint in Game of Thrones. The actress was quoted in The Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actress Roundtable saying, "Well, Sam [Taylor-Johnson, the director] is a magician. I love her, and I thought her vision was beautiful. But the last time that I was naked on camera on [Game of Thrones] was a long time ago, and yet it is the only question that I ever get asked because I am a woman."

1 Fans Could Have Seen Gwyneth Paltrow As Rose In Titanic

Founder of the huge company Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow was up in the running for the role with Kate Winslet! Paltrow told Howard Stone, "I look back at the choices I've made and think, 'Why the hell did I say yes to that? And no to that?' And you know, you look at the big picture and think: There's a universal lesson here. What good is it to hold onto roles?" What good is it indeed.
